An Unexpected Meal in Venice, Italy

Typically, whenIMG_0281 you go to Italy, you get Italian food. I visited Gam Gam, a fabulous kosher restaurant in the old Jewish “ghetto”. Very worthwhile if you are visiting the Jewish Ghetto Museum, just a couple blocks down from Gam Gam. Yum!!
Italy is known for it‘s delicious pasta, tangy Pomodoro sauce, fresh bread, creamy alfredo sauce, and out-of-this-world desserts. But no one knows about the little places like Gam Gam, hidden behind the touristy gondola rides.

Although Kosher food might have some restrictions, this restaurant brings the word “falafel” to a whole new level.

When we arrived at Gam Gam, we didn’t know what to expect. Would this be a typical matzo-ball soup type of place, or would they do something truly spectacular?

As soon as I walked in, I heard the chef singing along to a lively song in Hebrew. It smelled like olive oil and herbs. All the customers were chatting happily with each other. I got very good vibes.
My family and I decided to share a bunch of different dishes including a tasting plate (more on that later), Chicken Shawarma, and Beef Kebabs. The tasting plate consisted of falafel, pita bread, hummus, baba ganoush (a savory eggplant dip), various pickled vegetables, a chickpea and celery salad, and hard-boiled eggs. It was delicious!
The service was very good, as the main courses came soon after the plate. If you are going with kids, I recommend the kebabs because they come as three little hamburgers nestled against a bed of lettuce, cucumbers and shredded carrots with a mayonnaise-ish dipping sauce.
The shawarma was the best part of the meal, however. It was small pieces of chicken in a fragrant curry sauce, sitting on a bun with rice.
We decided against dessert, but we definitely had a great meal.
4 and 1/2 stars
Fairly good
